Founded on 20th May 1985, the Florence-based Fondazione di Studi Storici "Filippo Turati" (Filippo Turati Historical Studies Foundation) is governed by a board of university professors, research fellows, and scholars. Pursuant to Presidential Decree dated 6th November 1986 the Foundation acquired the status of a non-profit organisation. As stated in article one of its statute, scope of the Foundation is the promotion and organisation as well as the documentation and publication of historical studies with special attention to the history of the Labour and Socialist Movements both in Italy and abroad.

As such, the Foundation is attending member of a number of national and international institutions including IALHI (International Association of Labour History Institutions),  ICA (International Council on Archives), AICI (Associazione Italiana degli Istituti Culturali - Italian Association of Cultural Institutes), and ANAI (Associazione Nazionale Archivistica Italiana - National Italian Archival Association). It also actively collaborates with public institutions such as the Archivio Centrale dello Stato (Central State Archive), Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze (National Central Library of Florence), Sovrintendenza archivistica della Toscana (Superintendence for Archives in Tuscany), with local government, and with private historical research centres both at a national and international level. The Foundation's first President for a number of years after its inception in 1985 was the former President of Italy, Sandro Pertini. He was followed by Professor Giuliano Vassalli, Emeritus President of the Italian Constitutional Court. The Foundation is currently directed by Maurizio Degl'Innocenti, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Siena.
